One Blanket, One Patch of Sun, and No Plans to Get Up Anytime Soon

AI imagescottish foldlawn napbackyard

Spread out on a soft cream blanket in the middle of the backyard, Ruth and Pebble have given in completely to the warm afternoon. Ruth lies on her side in her olive quilted vest, eyes closed, her cheek resting against the top of Pebble's round grey head. Pebble is curled tight beside her, his folded ears flattened, his eyes shut, and his tail wrapped neatly around his body. Both of them wear the same expression of total peace. Behind them, the garden is full of hydrangeas and potted plants, a watering can sits in the grass, and an old wooden fence borders the yard.

Sunbathing is one of a cat's favorite pastimes. Cats seek out warm spots because their comfortable temperature range runs higher than ours, and lying in the sun saves them energy. Even so, too much sun isn't great for every cat. Light-colored or thin-furred cats can get sunburned on their ears and noses, and any cat can overheat on a hot day. Make sure there is shade and fresh water nearby, and keep naps outdoors supervised. A few garden plants, including lilies, are very dangerous to cats, so it's wise to know what's growing in your yard before letting a cat lounge there.

It's hard to tell who fell asleep first. Either way, this patch of sun is officially taken, and it looks like neither of them plans to give it up anytime soon.
