They Lay Down on the Lawn for a Few Minutes and Fell Fast Asleep
Sunlight slants low across the backyard, warming the grass and the plaid blanket where Harold and Bev have stretched out for an afternoon nap. They lie close together, heads touching, eyes closed, hands clasped between them in their matching cream sweaters. Neither has moved in quite a while. Curled on the corner of the blanket just in front of them is Duchess, her thick seal point coat glowing in the light and her bushy tail wrapped around her body. Unlike her people, she's awake, blue eyes calmly watching the yard. A garden hose, a basket of tools, and potted plants sit along the edge of the lawn.
Spending a little time outdoors in the sun is something many older adults enjoy, and a pet often makes it easier to get outside in the first place. A few practical tips keep these lazy afternoons pleasant for everyone. Use a blanket to keep off damp ground, bring water, and don't let pets or people nap too long in strong sun. For cats, lawns treated with fertilizer, weed killer, or pest products can be harmful if they walk through and then lick their paws, so it helps to know what's been used on the grass. Watch for bees and stinging insects as well.
Duchess seems to have taken the job of lookout very seriously. With her on duty, Harold and Bev can sleep as long as they like.
