Abuela Sat Down for Her First Sip of Coffee and Found She Had Company. Twice.
Dawn has barely broken, and the porch light is still glowing beside the screen door. Abuela Rosa sits on the concrete steps in a green cardigan and her floral apron, both hands around a big mug of coffee, taking that first slow sip of the day. Copito has planted himself right up front, his shaggy face close and serious, as if he is guarding the steps. Behind him, perched on the step beside Rosa, sits a second, smaller Maltese with a tidier coat and bright curious eyes. The two little dogs look like a matching pair, both wide awake long before the rest of the street.
Living with more than one small dog can be a joy, and many Maltese enjoy canine company. A few habits help keep a two-dog household calm: separate food bowls so no one guards a meal, individual attention for each dog, and enough beds or cozy spots that nobody has to compete. Maltese are known for being affectionate and people-oriented, so they often do well with a friend at home, though every dog's personality is different. If you are thinking about adding a second dog, introducing them on neutral ground and taking things slowly usually helps.
Rosa sips, the morning brightens, and her little white sentries keep watch over a quiet street. It is not a bad way to start a day: warm coffee, cool steps, and two small dogs who think you hung the moon.
