Everyone Says Cats Hate Water. Nobody Told Miso on Car Wash Day.

Water is arcing from the hose in a glittering spray, and Miso has decided it must be stopped. The Siamese stands on the wet driveway with one front paw raised high, batting at the stream as it splashes off the side of an old beige sedan. Her blue eyes are wide and her ears are perked with intense focus. Grandma Edie leans over the hood in a green quilted vest and gray shirt, scrubbing with a blue sponge, glasses pushed up into her white curls and a faint smile on her face. Laundry, potted plants, and a sunny yard fill the background of this splashy afternoon.

It is a common belief that all cats hate water, but plenty of cats are fascinated by it, especially running water like a dripping faucet or a hose. Some Siamese cats are known for this kind of curiosity. Moving water may attract them because it looks lively and, in nature, flowing water tends to be fresher. Many cats drink more from a pet water fountain than a still bowl for this reason. If your cat plays with water outdoors, keep car-washing soaps and chemicals out of reach, and dry wet fur afterward so the cat does not get chilled.

The car will get clean eventually, and Miso will probably end up just as wet as the bumper. Some chores go faster alone, but they are rarely this much fun.
