Grandma Ruth Was Stuck on the Puzzle. Her Bichon Pulled Up a Chair to Help.

Half a forest scene is already finished on the wooden kitchen table, with pine trees and a blue sky slowly taking shape. Ruth leans over the puzzle, glasses on, hands hovering as she hunts for the piece that fits just right. Loose pieces are scattered everywhere, along with a folded napkin and a glass of water. On the rush-seat chair beside her, Cotton sits upright and attentive, head tilted slightly as if he is about to point out the missing corner. Morning light fills the white kitchen behind them, where a kettle waits on the counter.

Jigsaw puzzles are a popular pastime for many older adults, and for good reason. They encourage focus, patience, and problem-solving, and finishing a section brings a nice sense of accomplishment. Having a calm pet nearby can make a long puzzle session even more pleasant. That said, a curious dog and a table full of small cardboard pieces are not always a great mix. Puzzle pieces can be chewed or swallowed, so it helps to keep the puzzle out of reach when you step away. Teaching a dog to settle politely on a chair or bed nearby, with a chew toy of their own, keeps everyone happy.

Every puzzler needs a good assistant, and Cotton seems to take the job very seriously. He might not be much help finding edge pieces, but as company for a slow, cozy afternoon, he is a perfect fit.
