Grandma June Took a Walk Through Her Pumpkin Patch. Blue Couldn't Stop Grinning.
Autumn has transformed the garden into a patchwork of orange and gold. Pumpkins of all sizes peek out from tangled, yellowing vines, and fallen leaves crunch underfoot. June strolls through the rows in an olive quilted vest and gray shirt, glasses on and silver hair blowing loose, smiling with pure delight. Blue trots right at her side, mouth open in a big happy grin, his blue merle coat glowing in the soft light and his one blue eye sparkling. A stack of firewood, a garden hose, and a wooden fence line the edge of the yard.
A walk through the pumpkin patch is a wonderful fall outing for an energetic dog like an Australian Shepherd. Plain cooked pumpkin is often given to dogs in small amounts, but raw pumpkin, stems, and leaves are tough to digest and best avoided. Rotting or moldy pumpkins can make dogs sick, so do not let them nibble on what they find in the field. Fall gardens can also hide hazards like sharp stakes, wire, and ticks in leaf litter. After a garden walk, check paws for burrs and thorns and run your hands through your dog's coat to look for ticks. Ask your vet about tick prevention.
June and Blue look like they could walk through this patch all afternoon. With crisp air, colorful leaves, and good company, autumn simply does not get any better.
