Grandma Sat on the Porch Swing to Rest Her Eyes. She Wasn't Alone for Long.
The porch swing has stopped swaying, and both of its passengers have drifted off. Grandma Edie leans back against a plaid cushion with her eyes closed and her tortoiseshell glasses slipping down her nose. In her arms, Frost is completely limp with sleep, his face nestled against her chest, ear tufts sticking up, and his eyes squeezed shut in total contentment. His huge, fluffy body covers most of her lap and spills over the side. A potted plant sits on the porch rail, and the chains of the swing disappear upward into the shade.
For many older adults, a pet offers steady, everyday companionship that can make home feel warmer and less lonely. The simple act of holding a calm, purring animal is something many people describe as soothing. Cats also tend to seek out the people they trust most when it's time to rest. If you share naps with a large cat, make sure you're supported comfortably, especially on a swing or rocking seat, and that the cat can hop down easily when they choose. A well-secured swing and a soft cushion help keep everyone safe and cozy.
Neither Edie nor Frost looks like they plan to move anytime soon. The afternoon is warm, the swing is comfortable, and the porch is quiet except for the occasional creak of the chains.
The best naps are the ones you don't plan, shared with someone who is just as happy to drift off beside you.
