An older man in red flannel wraps a small white Maltese in a cream cable-knit blanket by the door on a rainy day. 9 / 35

The Rain Soaked Grandpa and Pearl on Their Walk. He Knew Just What to Grab.

Rain still streaks the window by the front door, and two pairs of muddy rubber boots stand on the tray where they were kicked off. Grandpa Gus has knelt in the entryway in his red flannel and wrapped Pearl snugly in a thick cream cable-knit blanket. Only her little white face pokes out, a bit damp and tousled, with her dark eyes looking up at him. Gus gazes down at her with a tender, crinkly smile. A dripping umbrella leans by the door, coats hang on hooks above, and a basket of colorful dog toys waits nearby.

Small dogs can get chilled quickly after a wet walk, especially breeds like the Maltese that have a single coat with no thick undercoat. Towel-drying right away, paying attention to the belly, legs, and paws, helps them warm up and keeps their long hair from matting. If you use a hair dryer, keep it on a low, cool or warm setting and at a safe distance. On cold, rainy days, a lightweight dog raincoat can keep a small dog much more comfortable. Check between the toes for mud or debris, and wipe the paws clean before they settle in.

Pearl doesn't seem to mind the rain now that she's wrapped up in Gus's arms. The blanket is soft, the house is warm, and that's all a little dog really needs after an adventure.

A soggy walk is a small price to pay for being bundled up and fussed over like royalty afterward.
