Harold and Bev Sat Down on the Lawn to Rest. Their Great Dane Thought He Was a Lap Dog.

Evening has crept into the backyard, and the lantern on the porch has just flickered on. Harold and Bev have settled onto the grass in their cozy cream cable-knit sweaters, leaning into one another with their eyes closed, heads tipped together in a peaceful doze. Duke has joined them in the most Great Dane way possible, sprawling his enormous fawn body across their laps and resting his head on Bev's knee, droopy eyes half shut. Potted plants, a garden hose, and a wooden fence fade into the soft dusk behind them.

Despite their size, Great Danes are well known for wanting to be close to their people, and many seem convinced they are lap dogs no matter how big they get. Cuddling is part of their charm, but their weight can be a lot for anyone to hold for long. Encouraging a large dog to lie beside you rather than on you can protect knees and hips. Great Danes, like many giant breeds, also benefit from soft, supportive surfaces to rest on, because lying on hard ground for long periods can be tough on their joints. A thick outdoor blanket or padded mat makes lawn lounging more comfortable for everyone.

For now, nobody seems to mind the weight. The three of them look completely at peace, sharing a quiet moment at the end of a long, gentle day.
