An elderly couple in cream sweaters sip iced lemonade on a covered porch as a fawn Great Dane rests its head near them. 24 / 30

Harold and Bev Poured Two Glasses of Lemonade. They Forgot to Count Duke.

Evening is settling over the garden, and the porch lantern has just flickered on. Harold and Bev relax in wicker chairs with tall glasses of iced lemonade, lemon slices floating among the ice. Bev's eyes crinkle with delight as she sips, and Harold raises his glass toward her. A full pitcher sits on the side table next to a pair of reading glasses. Duke has squeezed in front of them, his giant fawn head front and center, mouth slightly open and eyes glancing sideways with that unmistakable look of a dog hoping someone will share.

Lemonade is not a good drink for dogs. Citrus fruits contain oils and compounds that can upset a dog's stomach, and most lemonade is loaded with sugar, which dogs do not need. Some sugar-free versions contain xylitol, a sweetener that is toxic to dogs even in small amounts. The best porch drink for a dog is a big bowl of cool, fresh water, especially for a large breed like a Great Dane on a warm evening. Some dogs also enjoy a few ice cubes as a crunchy treat, though very hard ice can be tough on teeth, so smaller pieces are a safer bet.

Duke may not get a glass of his own, but he clearly has the best seat in the house. Harold and Bev seem happy to share their porch, their evening, and their company with their favorite giant.
