Grandpa Fell Asleep in His Recliner. The Big Husky Decided the Armrest Was His Now.

The television is off, the remote sits forgotten on the stand, and Grandpa Hank has lost his battle with the afternoon. He is slumped back in his brown recliner, eyes closed, mouth slightly open, arms resting loosely across his overalls. Copper, who is far too large to be sitting on an armrest, has nonetheless made it work. He sprawls half on the chair arm and half against Hank's side, front paws dangling, head held up with an alert, slightly smug expression. A plaid throw, a houseplant by the window, and a framed photo on the side table round out the cozy living room.

Dogs love to be up high and close to their people, which explains why so many of them end up on couches, chair arms, and beds. Being pressed against a sleeping owner gives a dog warmth, security, and a great view of the room at the same time. If you are happy sharing furniture, it can be a sweet way to bond. Just keep an eye on older or heavier dogs jumping on and off tall furniture, since repeated jumps can be hard on joints. A ramp, a step, or a sturdy dog bed placed right next to the chair can offer the same closeness with less strain. If your dog starts hesitating to jump, mention it to your vet.

Copper does not look tired at all. He looks like he is on duty, guarding Hank's nap from whatever might dare to interrupt it.

Somebody has to keep watch, after all, and Copper takes the job seriously.
