Grandma Nell Went to the Market for Tomatoes. Pepper Went for Everything Else.
String lights hang beneath a canvas canopy, and the evening market is piled high with produce: baskets of oranges and tomatoes, crates of potatoes, leafy greens, and squash. Grandma Nell walks slowly past the stalls in a cream quilted vest over a gray top, holding Pepper's leash loosely in one hand and smiling down at him. Pepper ambles alongside, his shaggy black coat and white chest catching the warm glow, nose lifted slightly as he takes in every new smell. A porch light shines from a house behind them, and the whole scene has the friendly, slow pace of a small-town evening.
Taking a dog to a farmers market can be a wonderful outing for socialization, as long as the dog is relaxed around crowds and other animals. Check that the market allows pets before heading out, and keep the leash short in busy aisles so your dog does not bump into displays or other shoppers. Be alert for dropped food, since items like onions, grapes, or rich baked goods are not safe for dogs. On warm days, pavement can heat up, so it helps to test it with your hand and carry fresh water. If your dog seems overwhelmed, a quieter corner or an early exit is always fine.
Pepper seems to be enjoying the outing at least as much as Nell does. To a dog, a market like this is a whole world of interesting scents.
Fresh vegetables for supper and a happy dog at your side: the evening could hardly go better.
