The Fire Was Crackling and the Quilt Was Warm. Sterling Claimed the Best Spot.
A fire crackles in the old stone fireplace, throwing warm orange light across the room, and Grandma Dottie has settled into her armchair under a soft patchwork quilt in faded blues and creams. Nestled in the folds of the quilt on her lap, Sterling sits upright with his front paws resting on the fabric, gazing toward the flames with half-lidded, contented eyes. Dottie looks down at him with a tender little smile. A basket of kindling sits beside the hearth, a teacup waits on the side table, and potted plants line the mantel above.
Cats love warmth, and a fireplace can be a favorite gathering spot in winter. To keep it safe, always use a sturdy fireplace screen, since a curious cat can get too close to sparks or hot embers. Tails and whiskers can singe surprisingly fast. Never leave a fire burning unattended with pets in the room, and keep matches, lighters and fire-starting supplies out of reach. Ashes can stay hot for hours, so store them in a metal container away from pets. If a fire isn't an option, a heated pet pad or a warm blanket in a sunny spot gives a cat the same cozy feeling without the risk.
On a cold evening, few places are better than a quilted lap beside a gentle fire. Sterling seems to agree completely, and Dottie isn't about to argue.
