Loretta and Cotton Walked the Old Country Road Just as the Sun Went Down
The sun is sinking low over the fields, washing the quiet country road in gold. Grandma Loretta, in her denim jacket and plaid shirt, walks slowly along the dirt lane with the leash looped loosely in one hand, glancing down with a gentle smile. Cotton trots happily beside her, his white curls glowing in the evening light, his blue harness snug and his mouth open in a cheerful pant. Tall grasses, wildflowers and wooden fence posts line both sides of the road, and the trees at the edge of the field stand dark against the bright sky.
Bichon Frises are small but lively, and most need a daily walk plus some play to stay happy and healthy. Walks also provide mental stimulation, giving dogs a chance to sniff and explore. For older adults, a regular stroll with a dog is a pleasant way to stay active and get outdoors. A harness, like the one Cotton wears, is often more comfortable than a collar for small breeds, since it spreads pressure across the chest. On country roads, stay alert for traffic and wildlife, and check your dog's coat afterward for ticks, burrs and foxtails, which can hide easily in a Bichon's thick, curly fur.
Sunset walks have a way of slowing everything down. With the sky glowing and Cotton bouncing along beside her, Loretta has found the perfect way to end the day.
