Grandma Dozed Off in Her Recliner. Cotton Took His Post on the Armrest.
The TV screen has gone dark, the afternoon sun is slanting across the carpet, and Grandma Loretta has drifted off in her worn tan recliner. Her glasses are still on, her gray cardigan is wrapped loosely around her, and her head has tipped back against the cushion in a deep, peaceful snooze. Draped over the wide armrest beside her is Cotton, his fluffy white chin resting on the soft fabric, one paw dangling over the edge and his eyes heavy and half-closed. He's not quite asleep yet, but he's getting there. A basket of blankets and a TV stand sit across the cozy living room.
Many dogs like to rest on the arm of a chair or couch because it lets them stay close to their person while keeping an eye on the room. For small dogs like Bichons, though, jumping on and off high furniture again and again can be hard on joints over time, so pet steps or a ramp beside a favorite chair can help. If you have a recliner, always check where your dog is before closing the footrest, since small pets can get caught in the mechanism. Quiet afternoon naps with a pet nearby are a simple comfort many older adults treasure, offering warmth and companionship without any effort at all.
Before long, both of them will be fast asleep. With the house quiet and her loyal little friend right at her side, Loretta's afternoon nap is in very good hands.
