Grandpa Hank Set Out Two Lawn Chairs for the Sunset. Only One Got Used.
The sun is slipping behind the fence, painting the backyard gold, and Grandpa Hank has set out two folding lawn chairs for the occasion. Only one of them is actually being used. Hank sits back in his green camp chair in a plaid shirt and pocket-packed fishing vest, a pair of pliers and a phone tucked into the front pouches, smiling softly toward the glow. Pewter has skipped his own chair entirely and settled right onto Hank's lap, sitting upright with his silver chest puffed out and his eyes half closed against the light. The empty chair beside them holds only a folded blue towel, and laundry flutters on a line across the yard.
Evening is a favorite time for many cats. As crepuscular animals, they are naturally more active around dawn and dusk, which is why your cat may suddenly perk up just as you are winding down. For indoor cats, supervised time in a fenced yard, a secure catio, or on a harness can be a lovely way to enjoy the outdoors safely. Dusk is also when many wild animals become active, so it is a good idea to bring cats inside before full dark. Make sure your cat is microchipped and that your contact information is up to date with the chip registry, since even well-behaved cats can be startled into bolting. A little evening routine, like sitting out together for a while, can become something both you and your cat look forward to.
That second chair may never get used. Pewter has made it clear that the best seat for watching a sunset is the one with Hank already in it.
