Grandpa Set Up His Easel in the Garden. His Poodle Took the Best Seat in the House.
A wooden easel has been set up right in the middle of the vegetable garden, and Earl is perched on a folding stool with a brush in hand, dabbing color onto a canvas. His paint box sits open on the easel's ledge, a jumble of blues, greens, and yellows, with a paint-stained rag hanging off the side. Pearl lies stretched out in the grass at his feet, front paws crossed, looking calm and content to be an art critic who only offers silent approval. Pots of herbs line the brick edging, and a watering can and tools are scattered around the fence behind them.
Hobbies like painting can be a wonderful fit for retirement, and having a dog nearby often makes them even more enjoyable. A calm, well-exercised dog is far more likely to settle down quietly while you focus. Poodles are energetic and bright, so a good walk or a play session before a long project helps. It is worth remembering that some art supplies are not safe for pets. Certain paints, solvents, and thinners can be toxic if licked or swallowed, and paint-covered rags or brushes can tempt a curious nose. Keeping supplies up off the ground and cleaning up spills right away goes a long way. If you think your dog has swallowed something it should not, talk to your vet.
Whatever ends up on that canvas, Pearl is clearly part of the picture. Every artist needs a muse, and this one happens to be curly and white.
