Earl Was Reaching for the Perfect Apple. Pearl Found Something Better on the Ground.

Late afternoon light filters through the apple trees, and the branches hang heavy with shiny red fruit. Earl has one knee down in the grass, reaching up with his hand cupped around a ripe apple, his glasses catching the glow. Pearl is busy with her own harvest, nose pressed to the ground among the fallen apples scattered across the orchard floor. She has found one she likes and is giving it a long, thorough sniff. A split-rail fence and rows of trees stretch out behind them into the soft golden haze.

Apples can be a crunchy, refreshing treat for many dogs when offered the right way. Plain apple slices with the core and seeds removed are the safest option, since the seeds contain compounds that are not good for dogs, and the core can be a choking hazard. As with any treat, small portions are best. Orchards and backyards in fall bring another concern: windfall apples that have started to rot and ferment on the ground. Dogs that eat a lot of fallen fruit can end up with an upset stomach, and spoiled fruit is best avoided. If your dog has eaten a large amount of fallen fruit and seems unwell, talk to your vet.

Earl is picking the best apples from the branches while Pearl inspects the ones that got away. Between the two of them, nothing in this orchard goes unnoticed.
