The Lanterns Were Lit and Grandma's Feet Were in the Lake. Teddy Stayed Right There.
Lanterns flicker along the edge of the wooden dock as twilight settles over the lake. Dottie sits at the very end with her black leggings rolled up and her bare feet dangling in the cool, still water, little ripples spreading out around her toes. She has one hand resting gently on Teddy, who sits upright beside her on the weathered planks, fluffy and alert, looking out across the water with a relaxed, curious face. Trees line the far shore, reeds poke up near the dock, and the whole scene has a hushed, peaceful glow.
Lakes and docks are lovely places to unwind, but small dogs need a little extra care around water. Shih Tzus are not natural swimmers. Their short noses, heavy coats, and short legs can make swimming tiring and difficult, so a dog life jacket is a smart idea near deep water. Dock edges can also be slippery, and a small dog that falls in may have trouble climbing back out. It is also wise to keep dogs from drinking lake water, since it can contain bacteria, parasites, or harmful algae, especially when the water looks green or scummy in warm weather. Bringing fresh drinking water and a towel for damp fur makes lakeside evenings easier for everyone.
Teddy seems perfectly happy to stay dry on the dock while Dottie enjoys the water. Some evenings are made for sitting still, listening to the lake, and keeping good company.
