Dottie Put On One of Her Old Records, and Teddy Knew Exactly Where to Go
A record is spinning on the turntable in the corner, and the living room glows with warm lamplight. Dottie sits in her favorite chair wrapped in a thick cream cable-knit sweater, glasses on and a soft, peaceful smile on her face. Teddy is nestled right in her lap, front paws draped over her arm, his gold and white head tilted slightly as he looks out with bright, gentle eyes. A tall stack of vinyl albums leans against the cabinet, a mug sits on the side table, and framed family photos and houseplants fill the shelves behind them.
Listening to music is one of life's simple pleasures, and for many older adults, familiar songs bring back vivid memories and a lift in mood. Sharing that time with a lap dog adds warmth and physical comfort. Shih Tzus are well suited to this kind of quiet companionship, as they were bred to be lap dogs and generally enjoy being held and cuddled. Dogs have sensitive ears, though, so moderate volume is kinder, and it is a good idea to let a dog leave if the music seems to bother them. Many dogs seem to relax to soft, slow music. Watching for a relaxed body, softened eyes, and steady breathing will tell you your dog is enjoying the session as much as you are.
With the music playing low and a warm dog in her lap, Dottie has everything she needs for a perfect evening. Teddy seems to agree that this is the best seat in the house.
