Breakfast on the Patio Looked Perfect. Then a Grey Nose Arrived at Table Height.
Sunlight spills across the patio table, catching the steam from a mug of coffee and the bright green of sliced avocado on toast. Frank, in a blue plaid shirt, is beaming, and Dolores leans in with her hand on the table, both of them watching Pepper with obvious affection. The scruffy grey dog has parked himself right at table height, nose tipped toward the plates, mouth slightly open, a picture of hopeful good manners. A bowl of strawberries and blueberries, a dish of butter, and a few crackers fill out the spread, while potted plants and garden chairs crowd the cheerful yard.
That avocado toast is one breakfast item worth keeping out of reach. Avocado contains a substance called persin, and while dogs are generally less sensitive to it than some other animals, the flesh is rich and fatty and the large pit is a serious choking and blockage hazard. Strawberries and blueberries, on the other hand, are often considered fine dog snacks in small amounts when washed and cut up. Coffee should always stay away from dogs because caffeine can make them very sick. A safer table-side treat is a piece of their own kibble or a dog biscuit kept in a pocket.
Pepper doesn't need to understand any of that. He just knows the sun is warm, his people are smiling, and breakfast smells wonderful. For a rescue dog, that's a pretty perfect morning.
