The Plan Was to Wash the Old Car. Pepper Heard the Hose Turn On.

The old sedan is half covered in suds, and the car wash has officially gotten out of hand. Frank, in his olive fleece, is scrubbing the fender with a blue sponge, but he's too busy laughing to make much progress. Dolores, wearing a mustard jacket, aims the hose low, and Pepper is bounding straight into the spray with his mouth open, front paw lifted, water flying off his wiry grey coat in every direction. A bucket sits by the tire, the garage door stands open behind them, and garden pots and odds and ends crowd the edges of the driveway.

Many dogs are fascinated by moving water, and hose play can be a great way to cool off on a warm day. A few tips keep it fun. Use gentle pressure and aim low rather than at the face, since a strong blast can hurt eyes, ears, or the inside of the mouth. Hoses left in the sun can also start out with very hot water, so let it run cool first. Car soaps and cleaning products shouldn't be licked or swallowed, so rinse a sudsy dog well and keep chemicals out of reach. Afterward, a good towel-off is especially welcome for shaggy coats that hold water.

The car might end up cleaner than it has been in years, or it might not. Either way, Pepper clearly thinks this is the best chore ever invented.
