Abuela Rosa Was Clearing the Snowy Walk. A Hairless Helper Had Questions About It.

The porch lantern is glowing, a wreath hangs on the door, and a fresh layer of snow has blanketed the sidewalk. Abuela Rosa, in a navy puffy coat over her flowered apron, is bent over a yellow shovel, scooping a path clear. She's smiling down at a surprising helper. Chispa has ventured out into the snowbank right beside her and is crouched low, one front paw stretched out to swat at the powdery white surface, tail curled up behind her, ears perked in fascination. The neighborhood around them is quiet, rooftops white and a small evergreen sparkling near the steps.

This is one outing a Sphynx should keep very short. Without a coat, hairless cats lose body heat quickly, and cold, wet snow on bare skin can chill them dangerously fast. If a Sphynx is curious about snow, a better option is to bring a small bowl of it indoors to sniff and paw, or let them watch from a warm window perch. If they do step outside, a few seconds is plenty, followed by a gentle towel-dry and a warm blanket. Ice-melting salts and chemicals are also hard on paws and harmful if licked, so wipe their feet after any winter adventure.

Chispa's snow inspection is likely to end very soon, with a dash back to the warm house. Rosa, at least, will have a good laugh to carry her through the rest of the shoveling.
