The Rain Came Down in Sheets. Abuela Rosa and Chispa Watched It Side by Side.
Rain is falling in silver sheets beyond the porch railing, splashing on the steps and soaking the green yard, but under the wooden roof it's dry and peaceful. A lantern glows overhead, a fern spills from a clay pot, and Abuela Rosa stands holding Chispa securely in her arms, both of them gazing out at the storm. Rosa's face is calm and thoughtful, her silver hair pinned back, a light blue shirt under her pink-flowered apron. Chispa's big ears are angled toward the sound of the rain, golden eyes wide and fixed on the falling water, her wrinkled body tucked snugly against Rosa's side.
Many cats are fascinated by rain from a safe, dry spot, watching drops fall and listening to the patter. Some are uneasy during storms, though, especially with thunder, and may want to hide. Giving a cat a cozy retreat, such as a covered bed, a closet with a blanket, or a quiet room, lets them choose how close they want to be to the action. Sphynx cats tend to seek warmth even more when the air turns cool and damp, so a warm lap or a heated pad can be very welcome. If a cat seems extremely frightened by storms, your vet can suggest ways to help.
Chispa looks more curious than worried, safe in the arms of her favorite person. Watching the rain together might be the coziest thing to do all afternoon.
