Grandpa Earl Sat Down Under the String Lights With His Plate. A Tall Guest Arrived.
String lights glow over the patio as evening settles in, and Grandpa Earl is enjoying a plate of eggs, avocado toast, cheese, and tomatoes with a cup of black coffee at his elbow. He's grinning down with obvious affection, because Domino has pulled up beside the round table and leaned in close. The harlequin Great Dane's head rises nearly to table height, his nose just inches from Earl's arm, mouth slightly open, eyes soft and hopeful. Behind them, a wooden fence, potted plants, a garden hose, and a cushioned chair complete a cozy backyard scene.
Begging at the table is a habit many big dogs pick up, and a Great Dane's height makes it especially easy for them. Teaching a dog to lie on a mat during mealtimes, and rewarding them there, helps prevent snatched food. It's also worth knowing that deep-chested giant breeds like Great Danes are considered at higher risk for bloat, a serious emergency in which the stomach can fill with gas and twist. Many vets suggest feeding several smaller meals a day rather than one big one and avoiding vigorous exercise right after eating. Ask your vet about signs to watch for and prevention options.
Earl is probably going to slip Domino a bite of plain egg anyway. Under string lights on a warm evening, it's hard to resist a face like that.
