Grandpa Went to the Farmers Market for Tomatoes. Moose Went for Something Else.
Saturday morning means the farmers market, and Moose walks it like he owns the place. Walt strolls between the stalls in his faded overalls and denim shirt, a black leash looped loosely in one hand, smiling at something just out of view. Moose trots at his side with his tongue out and his tail swaying, clearly enjoying the smells drifting from every table. Around them are baskets of potatoes, crates of zucchini and leafy greens, boxes of apples, folding chairs, and canvas canopies flapping over the booths.
Busy outdoor markets can be a wonderful outing for a well-socialized dog, but a little preparation keeps it pleasant for everyone. Check first whether the market allows dogs, since some do not for food safety reasons. A short, non-retractable leash keeps a big dog close in crowds and away from produce tables. Bring water, especially on warm days, and watch for dropped food like onions, grapes, or corn cobs, which can cause problems if swallowed. If a dog seems overwhelmed by noise and people, a shorter visit or a quieter time of day can make a big difference, and building up slowly is perfectly fine.
Walt is mostly here for the tomatoes and a chat with the vendors. Moose is here for the attention, and with that happy face and fluffy chest, he gets plenty. It is hard to say which of them enjoys the trip more.
