The Lantern Came On at Dusk. Grandpa and Peanut Never Made It Inside.

Dusk has crept over the backyard, and the porch lantern has flickered on. Earl has fallen asleep on the hanging porch swing, leaning back against a cushion with his mouth relaxed and his arms resting at his sides. Curled right on top of him, nestled into his denim overalls, Peanut has closed her eyes too, her little chin tucked against his shirt and her silky coat spilling over his arm. The chains of the swing hang above them, and the yard beyond holds a watering can, a coiled hose, potted plants, and a weathered wooden fence.

Dogs that sleep on or right next to their owners are usually showing trust and attachment. A small dog like a Yorkie also simply enjoys the warmth of a person, since their fine coat does not hold heat well on cool evenings. Shared naps are sweet, but on a swing or other moving furniture, it pays to make sure a small dog cannot tumble off if they wake suddenly. As night falls, outdoor lights can draw insects, and evening is a common time for mosquitoes, so year-round parasite prevention that your vet recommends is a good idea for dogs who spend time outside.

For now, nobody is moving. The swing hangs still, the lantern glows softly, and the two of them breathe in the same slow rhythm. Some of the best evenings are the ones that end without anyone noticing.
