Grandpa Crouched Down in the Kitchen. His Border Collie's Tail Went Into Overdrive.
Something wonderful is happening in this kitchen, and Copper's tail knows it. The red and white Border Collie stands on the tiled floor with his plumed tail curled high and swishing, mouth wide open in a big happy grin. Harold, his white hair sticking up in soft tufts, crouches beside him in a red buffalo-check flannel shirt, smiling down with gentle affection. Sunlight spills over the counters, which are crowded with a dish rack, a bowl of bananas, a cutting board, a toaster, potted herbs, and a green towel hanging from the oven door.
Border Collies are widely considered one of the most intelligent and energetic dog breeds. Developed to herd sheep in the hill country between Scotland and England, they thrive on having a job to do and plenty of exercise. Without enough physical and mental stimulation, they can become restless and may invent their own jobs, like herding children or chasing cars. Daily walks, fetch, puzzle toys, and training sessions keep them content. Red and white is a less common but recognized coat color in the breed. For older owners, a Border Collie can be a wonderful companion as long as there is a plan for meeting its activity needs.
Copper may be wagging because of breakfast, a walk, or simply because Harold walked into the room. With a dog like this, the reason hardly matters. Every ordinary morning seems to come with its own little celebration.
