A white-haired grandpa hammers a nail into a weathered fence as a red and white Border Collie holds a stick in its mouth. 13 / 20

Grandpa Grabbed His Hammer to Fix the Fence. Copper Grabbed His Own Supplies.

The old picket fence has a loose board, and Harold has come prepared. Glasses on and hammer raised, he steadies a nail with careful fingers, his red flannel sleeves pushed up for the job. Copper has planted himself right at the fence post with a forked twig clamped in his teeth, holding it out like the most essential tool in the kit. His blue collar peeks through his thick white ruff, and his amber eyes glance sideways toward Harold as if waiting for instructions. A garden hose, potted plants, and a pair of shoes sit on the porch behind them.

Border Collies are bred to work closely with people, and many seem happiest when they feel they are contributing. Carrying objects is a natural outlet for that drive. Some owners teach their collies to fetch specific items, carry a basket, or bring the newspaper, which provides both purpose and mental stimulation. Sticks can be risky, though, since they splinter and can injure the mouth or throat, so a durable rubber toy is a better everyday choice. During home repairs, keep nails, screws, and sharp tools out of reach, and sweep up afterward so curious paws stay safe.

Copper may not be much help with the hammering, but he has clearly appointed himself foreman of the fence crew. Harold seems glad to have him. The fence will be fixed soon enough, and the company is the best part of the job.
