Abuela Cast Her Line Off the Old Dock. Her Fishing Partner Took the Job Seriously.

The old wooden dock creaks a little underfoot, and the pond beyond it is glassy and still. Abuela Rosa sits low on the planks with a fishing rod in her hands, glasses on and a pink floral apron tied over a blue T-shirt, smiling down at the reel as she adjusts the line. An open tackle box shows rows of shiny lures, a blue bucket holds the gear and a tangle of nets and gloves sits nearby with potted plants along the bank. In front of her, Chispa sits close with her ears softly folded, staring out at the water like a seasoned fishing partner who knows the next bite is coming any second.

Fishing trips with a dog can be a lot of fun with a few precautions. Fishhooks and lures are a real hazard, since curious dogs may try to sniff or mouth them, and a swallowed hook needs a vet right away. Keep tackle boxes closed when not in use, and never leave baited lines unattended. Docks can be slippery and some dogs do not swim as well as people assume, so a dog life jacket is a smart idea near deep water. Bring fresh drinking water too, because pond water can contain bacteria or algae that make dogs sick, and blue-green algae blooms in particular can be very dangerous.

Whether or not anything bites today, Rosa already has the best catch of the afternoon sitting right beside her on the dock.
