Grandma Stretched Out in the Hammock for a Quick Rest. Pip Had Other Ideas.

Strung between two sturdy old trees, a cream rope hammock has become the most peaceful spot in the yard. Grandma June lies back with her eyes closed and her head tipped to one side, her long silver braid tucked over the collar of her denim shirt. Her face is soft and completely at ease. Sprawled on her chest is Pip, front paws dangling over her arm and his silky blue and tan head resting just under her chin. His eyes are half closed, heavy with sleep, but he is still holding on to just enough alertness to keep watch. Green leaves hang overhead and a wooden fence lines the yard behind them.

Hammock naps with a small dog are cozy, but a few safety habits help. Make sure the hammock is securely tied and that both ends are anchored to healthy trees or a sturdy stand. Small dogs can slip through rope gaps or tumble out when the hammock swings, so keep them snuggled in close and never leave them alone in it. Spending time outdoors in shaded spots is great for both people and pets, but grassy, wooded yards can harbor ticks, so regular tick checks and preventive treatments recommended by your vet are a good idea. Bring a bowl of fresh water outside on warm days too.

Nobody is counting the minutes. With a breeze in the leaves and a warm little dog on her chest, June has found the perfect afternoon.
