Grandma Brought Pip Along for Market Day. He Had His Own Shopping List.
Crates of bright peppers, baskets of cucumbers and bundles of leafy greens line the busy market lane. Grandma June strolls along the stalls in a denim jacket and white T-shirt, silver braid swinging down her back, leash looped around her hand and a warm smile on her face as she looks down at her shopping partner. Pip trots beside her on a blue leash, tiny paws on the leaf-strewn path, ears perked and head tilted upward, clearly enjoying the sights and smells of market day. Canvas tote bags, wooden crates of carrots and onions and fresh herbs spill out across the scene in a cheerful jumble of color.
Farmers markets can be a fun outing for well-socialized dogs, but always check the market's rules first, since some do not allow pets. Crowds, strollers and dropped food can be a lot for a small dog, so a short leash and a comfortable harness help keep them close and safe. Watch for tempting scraps on the ground, as onions, grapes and some other produce are toxic to dogs. Bring water on warm days, and know when your pup has had enough. For small breeds like Yorkies, a carrier or tote can give them a break from busy foot traffic. The outing also gives older adults a pleasant reason to walk, chat and stay active.
June will likely leave with a bag full of fresh vegetables. Pip will leave with a head full of new smells and maybe a few new admirers.
