Grandma Dot Hung Fresh Sheets. Waffles Raced Right Through Them.
Fresh sheets billow across the courtyard, and Waffles is bounding through the middle of them. Grandma Dot stands in the back in a green cardigan and cream shirt, glasses on, reaching up to pin a long white sheet to the line. The dog trots straight toward the viewer with her mouth open in a cheerful pant, ears perked and chest out, a streak of tan, black and white under the hanging cloth. Clothespins dot the lines, a wicker basket waits on the left, and the patio behind is warm and cluttered with plants.
Laundry day is a joyful game for some dogs, with moving sheets that seem made for running through. It is mostly harmless, but keep an eye on clothespins and small items, which can be a choking hazard if picked up. Detergent and fabric softener can irritate a dog's stomach, so keep them stored out of reach. Dogs also love clean, sun dried bedding, so expect a few muddy paw prints. A bit of daily exercise like this is great for corgis, who are active dogs bred to work.
Dot keeps pinning and Waffles keeps running. In the end, the sheets get dried and the dog gets her exercise. The sheets snap gently in the breeze, and the smell of clean laundry mixes with sun and warm stone. It is the kind of ordinary afternoon that somehow feels like a small celebration.
