Otis and Clementine Took a Slow Walk Through the Pumpkin Patch
Pumpkins of every size dot the dry vines, and the autumn sun is soft and low as Otis ambles through the patch in his green cable-knit cardigan. He is smiling down at Clementine, who trots along beside him with her calico coat bright against the dirt and leaves. Her tail is held low, her eyes are sharp, and she looks very much like a cat inspecting the crop. Behind them, an old fence and a weathered shed fade into the golden haze. The air looks cool and a little smoky, just right for a long, unhurried afternoon.
Fall pumpkin patches are fun, but a few small precautions keep a cat safe. Plain pumpkin is generally fine for pets in small amounts, but the vines, stems, and leaves can be scratchy, and rotting pumpkins can grow mold that is not good for cats. Pumpkin spice decorations and candles can also be a problem, since some scented products are unsafe around pets. Outdoors, a harness and leash help keep a cat from bolting after a rustling mouse or bird, and a quick check of her coat for burrs and ticks afterward is a good habit. If she ever chews on something unfamiliar, talk to your vet. Cats are happiest when outings are short, calm, and followed by a cozy place to rest.
Otis and Clementine take their time, weaving between orange globes and curling leaves. They may pick one to bring home, or just enjoy the walk and call it a good day's work.
