Otis Shopped for Vegetables With Clementine Trotting Right Behind
Baskets of ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and lemons line the wooden tables as Otis walks along the path with a canvas bag in one hand. His cream cardigan and blue shirt are neat and his glasses are perched just so. He glances down with a calm smile as Clementine trots at his heels, calico tail straight up and nose pointed at the ground. Potted herbs, burlap sacks of potatoes, and a coiled green hose fill the corners of the sunny courtyard. The bag already holds a few treasures, and the shopping is clearly going well.
Fresh produce is full of tempting smells for a curious cat, but many vegetables and herbs are not safe for her. Onions, garlic, and chives can be harmful to cats, and some other plants can upset her stomach. Cats are meat eaters, so they do not need vegetables to be healthy, and it is better to keep the shopping bag and baskets out of reach. A harness and leash are helpful if you bring a cat on an outing, since busy places can be overwhelming, and a bag or carrier gives her a place to retreat. Short trips in calm spots are best. If she nibbles on something she should not, talk to your vet.
Otis stops now and then to look over a basket, and Clementine pauses right behind him. Their trip is unhurried, and the best bargain is a good walk with a loyal companion.
