Grandma Dropped the Tailgate at the Edge of the Field. Saffron Hopped Up.

The fields have gone a deep blue-green, and the last light is fading behind a row of distant trees. Grandma Ruth has lowered the tailgate of the old truck and settled onto it, a quilted green jacket buttoned over her plaid shirt, white hair pinned back. A single cab light glows overhead. Saffron sits upright on the scuffed tailgate beside her, paws together, ears tilted toward the rustling crops, and Ruth is gazing down at him with the kind of smile that only comes at the end of a long, good day. There is nothing much to do out here, and that is exactly the point.

Quiet time outdoors is good for people of every age, and many older adults find that a slow evening routine helps them unwind before bed. A calm companion makes it even easier to linger. If you take a cat out to the country, remember that open fields hold plenty of temptations, from mice and birds to unfamiliar smells, and a startled cat can vanish into tall grass in seconds. A harness and leash, or staying inside a vehicle or carrier, keeps things safe. It is also wise to make sure your cat is microchipped and wears identification, just in case. Bring water and keep an eye on the temperature as the evening cools.

Soon the crickets will start and Ruth will pull her jacket a little tighter. Saffron will lean into her side for warmth. And for a few more minutes, the two of them will simply watch the sky go dark together.
