Dappled shade from two big trees falls across the rope hammock, and the summer afternoon has become far too pleasant to stay awake. Abuela Rosa lies back with her eyes closed, a light blue tee under her flowered apron, a bracelet on her wrist, and her gray hair spread against the netting. Chispa is snuggled up against her side, eyes shut, chin resting on her chest, her brindle coat rising and falling in slow, sleepy breaths. Around them, the yard is a pleasant clutter of sandals, potted flowers, a watering can, a basket of garden gloves, and a shed door left half open.

Shih Tzus, with their short faces, can overheat more easily than many breeds, so a shaded spot like this is the right choice for an outdoor nap. On warm days, keep fresh water nearby, avoid midday heat, and watch for signs of overheating, such as heavy panting, drooling, or sluggishness. Paved patios can also get hot enough to hurt paw pads, so grass or a blanket is kinder underfoot. Many Shih Tzu owners keep the coat trimmed shorter during summer to help with comfort and grooming. If your dog seems to struggle with heat or breathing, talk to your vet.

For now, everything is just right. The breeze is soft, the shade is deep, and Rosa and Chispa have no plans for the rest of the afternoon except more of exactly this.
