The Rain Won That Walk. Abuela Rosa Had a Plan for Chispa.

The walk was supposed to be quick, but the rain had other plans. Now Abuela Rosa stands just inside the doorway, a cream knit blanket bundled around a thoroughly soggy Chispa. The little brindle Shih Tzu peeks out from the folds with damp, dark fur and big worried eyes, one wet paw dangling free. Rosa looks down at her with the gentlest smile, her glasses a bit steamy. Behind them a navy jacket hangs on a hook, a closed umbrella drips by the wall, and a pair of muddy rubber boots sits on the mat beside tiny paw prints on the floor.

Coming in from a rainy walk, a dog needs more than a quick pat. Drying thoroughly, especially between the toes and under the belly, helps prevent chilled skin and matted fur, which can happen quickly with long-coated breeds like the Shih Tzu. A towel works well, and a warm blanket afterward feels comforting to many dogs. Wipe paws before they cross the floor, because puddles can carry dirt and road residue, and check that nothing is stuck in the fur. Some small dogs also dislike thunder and wet weather, so a calm voice and a cozy spot help. If your dog shivers for a long time, talk to your vet.

Chispa will forgive the rain soon enough. With a blanket tucked around her and Rosa's arms holding her close, the whole stormy afternoon has turned into something warm and quiet.
