Earl Climbed Into His Old Green Pickup. The Passenger Seat Was Already Taken.
The old green pickup has seen better decades, with worn leather seats and a cracked steering wheel, but Earl sits behind it like a king on his throne. One hand rests on the wheel, and he turns with a crinkly grin toward his passenger. Custard has claimed the bench seat right next to him, sitting tall and fluffy, her flat face pointed straight ahead with the steady confidence of a navigator. Through the open window, a cluttered workshop glows behind them, with work boots, a potted cactus, and coils of rope crowding the shelves.
Car rides with cats are safest when the cat is secured. A loose cat can distract the driver, slip under the pedals, or be thrown forward during a sudden stop, so the best place for her is in a well-ventilated carrier buckled into the seat. Many cats feel more relaxed in a carrier that has been left out at home with a soft blanket and treats inside, so it does not only mean trips to the vet. Never leave a cat alone in a parked vehicle, because temperatures can rise quickly even on mild days, and flat-faced breeds are especially sensitive to heat. Short, calm practice drives help cats get used to travel.
Whether they are just idling in the driveway or headed somewhere for the afternoon, Custard clearly considers the passenger seat her rightful place. Earl does not seem inclined to argue with her.
