Ruth Rolled Out the Yoga Mat and Bruno Took It Personally
Lamplight warms the living room as Ruth folds forward on a yoga mat in a soft gray sweatsuit, glasses slipping down her nose, palms flat on the floor. Right next to her, Bruno has stretched his front legs far out, rear end up, tail curved high, in what looks exactly like a downward dog. His dark face rests near the mat and his brown collar glints in the light. A sofa piled with cushions and a throw sits behind them, and a plant on a side table glows in the lamp's shade. It is the rare moment when a dog and a person do the same thing at the same time.
Dogs naturally do a stretch like this, which is where the yoga pose gets its name. A morning or evening stretch can be a healthy habit for an older adult, and gentle movement helps with flexibility and balance. Boxers are active, bouncy dogs, and they usually enjoy joining their person for exercise. If you have a dog, keep the mat on a non-slip surface so neither of you slips on a wooden floor. If you have joint concerns, talk to your doctor before starting a new routine, and talk to your vet about your dog's exercise needs. Short, gentle sessions are plenty.
Ruth reaches a little further, and Bruno reaches too. The room is calm and the stretch looks very good for both of them.
