Nell Crouched Down Between the Pumpkins to Ask Bluebell One Question
Late-season dirt, tangled vines, and orange pumpkins scattered everywhere. Grandma Nell has crouched down in her denim shirt, silver braid swinging forward, smiling as she looks straight across at Bluebell. The Ragdoll stands among the dry stems with her head turned toward Nell, ears perked, fur lit warm by low sun. It looks like a serious conversation, and both of them are giving it their full attention. A few dead leaves and curled vines add to the cozy autumn mess. Somewhere nearby a crow calls, a crate waits by the gate, and the whole field smells of earth and dry leaves, the way a good autumn afternoon should.
Fall patches can be fun for pets, with a few cautions worth knowing. A small taste of plain pumpkin is generally considered gentle for many pets, but spiced pie filling, nutmeg and sweeteners are not a good idea, and whole carved pumpkins left outside can grow moldy. Fields may also have fertilizer, pesticide or fallen produce that has spoiled, so keep curious noses from nibbling. If your cat goes along, keep her on a harness and leash, and watch the weather and the time of day so she does not get chilly. Check with your vet about any food questions.
Whatever the two of them were discussing, it ended without a verdict. The pumpkins stayed put, the vines kept sprawling, and the afternoon went on being exactly as golden as it should be.
