Ruth Wanted One Nice Porch Picture. Miso Knew Exactly Where to Look.

AI imagesiamese catfront porchfamily portrait

Ruth insisted on a porch picture, and Harold leaned in so close their heads are practically touching. They sit on the wooden steps outside their blue-gray house, both beaming, his gray hair a little wild and her glasses slipping just slightly down her nose. Cradled in Ruth's arms, front and center, is Miso. The Siamese looks fluffier than ever, his long cream coat and smoky face framed perfectly, his blue eyes staring straight ahead with the steady composure of a cat who knows exactly how photogenic he is. A potted plant, a coiled garden hose and green lawn glow softly behind them.

Getting a good picture with a cat is half patience and half timing. Cats usually cooperate best when they are calm and a little sleepy, so after a meal or a nap is a good moment to try. Natural, indirect light is kinder than a flash, which can startle animals and create glowing eyes. Hold the cat securely with one arm under the chest and the other supporting the hind legs, and never force a pose. A treat or a favorite toy just above the camera can help draw the cat's gaze forward for a few precious seconds before it decides it is done.

This one will end up framed on the hallway wall, right between the grandkids' school portraits. Miso, of course, will assume it was his picture all along, and he might be right.
