Earl Poured a Tall Lemonade for the Porch. Maple Showed Up With a Grin.
The porch light is on as evening settles in, and Earl leans back with a tall glass of lemonade, a slice of lemon floating at the top. His green cardigan is warm, his glasses are a little crooked and his gray goatee curls above the straw. Maple the red Shiba Inu sits next to him with her mouth open in a wide, relaxed smile, ears up and her eyes bright. The porch is crowded with pots, work boots and a tennis ball in the corner, and the backyard glows green beyond it.
Warm evenings call for cool drinks, and a happy dog is the perfect porch companion. Just remember that dogs need their own water, and fresh cool water is the best refreshment for her. Lemons and other citrus can upset a dog's stomach, and sugary drinks are not good for pets, so keep the glass out of her reach. On hot days, Shiba Inus can overheat because of their thick coats, so shade and cool water matter. Panting heavily, drooling or weakness is a reason to call your vet right away.
Maple looks delighted with the whole arrangement. She doesn't need lemonade to have a good evening. Earl takes another slow sip and the porch light flickers on a little brighter. It is the kind of evening that makes a person glad to be home.
