Grandpa Hank Has Been Sewing This Quilt for Weeks. Pretzel Already Claimed It.
Glasses perched low on his nose, Grandpa Hank is bent over a big patchwork quilt spread across a rustic wooden table, threading a needle through squares of blue florals, plaid, and soft beige. His sewing room is a treasure trove: shelves stacked with folded fabric, a basket of yarn, a hook rack of sweaters and jackets, and a little houseplant soaking up window light. Right in the middle of all that careful work, Pretzel has curled up on the fabric pile and fallen sound asleep, her dappled body rolled into a neat bun and her chin tucked onto a fold of blue cloth.
Sewing rooms are full of tempting things for pets, and some of them are risky. Needles, pins, and especially thread can be dangerous if swallowed, because string-like objects can cause serious problems inside the digestive tract. Keeping a magnetic pin dish, storing needles away between sessions, and doing a quick floor sweep for stray pins are smart habits. If you ever suspect a pet has swallowed thread or a needle, don't pull on any thread you can see; call your vet right away. A designated cozy blanket for your dog near the work area can help keep them close without being right on the project.
Still, it's hard to argue with a dog who's chosen the finest bed in the house. When this quilt is done, it's safe to say it'll already have a favorite owner.
