Grandpa Otis Went to the Market for Tomatoes. Bruno Had His Own List.
Saturday morning at the farmers market means crates piled high with kale, apples, avocados, and bright little peppers, and Grandpa Otis is taking it all in at a leisurely pace. He's bundled in a chunky brown cardigan over a plaid shirt, glasses on and leash wrapped twice around his hand. Bruno is doing the steering. The brindle Frenchie trots ahead with his mouth open in a happy pant, bat ears up, clearly enjoying the sights and smells of every stall. Canvas tote bags, a blue cooler, and a few fallen leaves on the pavement round out the busy, cheerful scene.
Markets can be a fun outing for a well-socialized dog, but they come with a lot of stimulation. Crowds, strollers, other dogs, and dropped food are all part of the experience. A short, non-retractable leash keeps a dog close in tight aisles, and a harness is often more comfortable than a collar for flat-faced breeds like French Bulldogs. It's worth checking whether a market allows pets before heading out, bringing water, and going early before the pavement heats up. If a dog seems overwhelmed, with tucked tail, yawning, or pulling to leave, a quiet break or an early trip home is a kind choice.
Otis may have come for tomatoes, but Bruno came for the whole experience. Judging by that grin, the morning was a success on both shopping lists.
