Abuela Rosa Watched the Rain Fall. Mango Frowned at the Whole Storm.
Rain is coming down in sheets beyond the porch railing, and Abuela Rosa is watching it with a soft, faraway look. She wears a floral apron over a pale blue top, round glasses, small gold earrings, and her grey hair is pinned up in a bun. Beside her sits Mango, a chunky red tabby Exotic Shorthair with a flat little face and big amber eyes, who looks sternly at the weather as if it were personally responsible. Potted aloe and other plants line the rail, a wicker basket sits in the corner, and the green yard beyond is hazy with falling rain.
Cats often enjoy watching weather from a safe, sheltered spot. Sounds and movement are fascinating to them, and a covered porch offers fresh air without the risks of roaming. Exotic Shorthairs, a flat-faced breed related to Persians, are typically calm, affectionate, and happy to sit beside their person. Because of their short noses, they may be prone to watery eyes, so a gentle wipe with a damp cloth can help, and talk to your vet about any breathing concerns. Keep cats on a secure, screened porch rather than letting them wander, and make sure plants within reach are cat-safe, since some common ones are toxic.
Rain is one of those quiet occasions for sitting still. Rosa and Mango seem to know that and are in no hurry to move.
