Frank and Ruth Were Fixing the Old Fence. Domino Brought His Own Supplies.

A weathered section of wooden fence is getting some long-overdue attention. Ruth, in a green jacket with her hair pinned up, is carefully working a tool into the old boards, while Frank, in his olive cap and plaid flannel, digs through a metal toolbox for the right nail. Front and center, Domino has found his own contribution to the project: a long, crooked stick clamped proudly in his jaws. His serious expression suggests he believes this is the most important piece of lumber in the yard.

Many dogs love carrying sticks, and it makes sense; holding and toting objects is a natural behavior, especially for dogs who like to feel included. Still, real sticks can splinter and cause mouth or throat injuries, so many trainers suggest swapping them for a sturdy chew toy or rope toy when possible. Yard projects bring other hazards too. Loose nails, screws, staples, and sharp tools should be kept in a closed box and picked up afterward, and treated wood scraps or paint cans are best kept out of reach. A dog who wants to help can be given a safe job, like guarding a toy on a nearby mat, so everyone stays safe while the work gets done. If your dog swallows something sharp, call your vet right away.

Frank may say the fence will hold for another twenty years. Domino, meanwhile, appears to be keeping a spare board on hand, just in case.
