Henry Poured Himself a Cold Lemonade. Copper Had One Very Hopeful Look.
Dusk has turned the porch blue, and a warm lamp glows by the door. Henry sits in a green sweater with a tall glass of lemonade in his hand, a lemon slice floating among the ice cubes, and takes a slow sip through a straw. At his knee, Copper looks up with his mouth open, tongue showing, dark red coat shining in the lamplight. His eyes are fixed on the glass, but his manners are perfect, and his tail sweeps lightly across the wooden boards.
Dogs often pant to cool down after a hot day, and fresh water is the best refreshment for them. Citrus fruits, including lemons, can upset a dog's stomach and are best kept for the humans, and sweet drinks have no place in a dog's bowl. Never share drinks that contain alcohol, caffeine, or the sweetener xylitol, which is dangerous for dogs. A cool bowl of water, a shaded spot, and a few ice cubes are better ways to share the summer. Golden Retrievers are people lovers, and many learn to wait politely for attention when they are taught a simple settle or sit cue. Always make sure water is available on warm evenings, and talk to your vet if your dog seems to pant unusually hard or drink much more than normal.
Henry enjoys his lemonade slowly. Copper enjoys the company, and perhaps hopes for an ice cube.
