Henry Took Copper for an Evening Stroll. The Sunset Did the Rest.
The road is quiet and the light is turning gold, with tall trees glowing at the edge of a field and a mailbox standing by a rail fence. Henry walks along in a green sweater vest, gray shirt, and khakis, leash looped loosely in one hand and glasses catching the late sun. Copper walks beside him at an easy pace, dark red coat shining and mouth open in a relaxed pant, his gaze set forward. A cream house with a covered porch sits behind them, and leaves have collected on the verge.
A calm evening walk is one of the best routines for a dog and his person. Golden Retrievers are an active sporting breed, and most do best with daily exercise, which also helps with weight and behavior. Walks double as mental stimulation, since dogs love to sniff, so letting your dog sniff along the way is good for him. A leash is the safest choice on a road, and a reflective collar or light makes you easier for drivers to see at dusk. In warm weather, walk early or late, since pavement can burn paws and dogs overheat quickly. Bring water on longer outings, and check for ticks afterward. For many older adults, a daily walk with a dog is also a gentle reason to get out and keep moving. Ask your vet how much exercise suits your dog's age.
Their shadows stretch long down the road. Neither of them is in any hurry to turn back.
