The Sun Was Going Down on the Old Country Lane When Mochi Looked Up

The sky has gone orange and lavender over the trees, and the dirt lane is quiet except for the crunch of footsteps. Grandpa Ken pauses in a tan argyle sweater vest and plaid shirt, cheeks lifted in a contented smile, while Mochi stands close at his side. The fawn Pug looks up with tongue out and ears perked, brown collar and little tag catching the last of the light. A weathered picket fence, tall grass and the glow of a house window line the path behind them.

Evening walks are often perfect for Pugs. Because these flat-faced dogs have trouble cooling themselves, the hours around sunrise and sunset are usually more comfortable than midday in warm months. A harness instead of a collar-only setup is often recommended for breeds with short airways, since it takes pressure off the throat. As light fades, a reflective leash or a small clip-on light makes both of you easier to see on rural roads without sidewalks. Keep the pace gentle and watch for heavy panting or lagging behind, which is a sign to rest. For older walkers, a regular evening stroll is good, low-impact movement too.

Grandpa Ken and Mochi do not seem to be heading anywhere in particular, and that is the point. The lane, the sunset and the company are enough. A slow walk at the end of the day is one of life's simplest pleasures, and they have it down.
